There can be few more spectacularly placed lodges than Gorges – set as it is on the Zimbabwean side of the Batoka Gorge, just downstream of the famous Victoria Falls. With an elevation of 250 metres above the Zambezi River, guests are assured of dramatic views.
The lodge environs comprise unspoiled riverine vegetation inhabited by a good number of mammals and birds.
Gorges Lodge is small, with only 10 stone and thatch cottages. There are four double-storey suites with wide sheltered balconies and six single-story suites with verandas. Each unit is comfortable, and have ceiling fans, mosquito nets, mini-bar. All are en suite.
The main Lodge building houses the lounge, dining room and bar area, all tastefully decorated and comfortably welcoming.
Breakfast includes a continental buffet as well as a cooked English breakfast. For lunch there is a light refreshment menu, and in the evening you can enjoy a delicious three course dinner.
The lodge boasts beautiful gardens and surrounds, complete with a welcoming swimming pool. From this vantage point you're at eye level with black eagles, auger buzzards, gymnogene, trumpeter hornbills, peregrine falcons and occasionally the rare taita falcon.
There are a good number of activities on offer in Victoria Falls itself, some of which can be included in an all inclusive stay.
A special feature at the lodge is an all day tiger fishing excursion to Sidinda Island Lodge, approximately 80 kilometres further downstream. This white water and exclusive use area provides some of Zimbabwe's best tiger fishing. The policy is catch and release, unless a trophy fish is caught. Price is available on request.
